The USS Buckley Destroyer Escort (DE 51) was assigned to the North Atlantic to protect vulnerable merchant vessel convoys from the ever present threat of German submarines. On May 6, 1944 the USS Buckley rammed and destroyed the German submarine U-66 after making contact with the sub that was running on the surface.
